SLB 18-36 SERIES INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE PURCHASE OF YOUR NEW LIGHTNING AND POWER SURGE PROTECTION BOARD. THIS BOARD WILL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGE TO YOUR SPRINKLER CONTROLLER FROM LIGHTNING STRIKES AND POWER SURGES.

INSTALLATION OF YOUR NEW BOARD IS VERY SIMPLE AND CAN BE PERFORMED IN A FEW SHORT STEPS. NOTE: YOU WILL NEED AN 8 - 10 FOOT COPPER GROUND ROD, WIRE CLAMP, 6 TO 10 GAUGE COPPER WIRE, DRILL WITH A 3/16 INCH DRILL BIT, & HAND TOOLS.

STEP 1. WITH THE MANUAL FUNCTION OF YOUR CONTROLLER, TEST ALL THE ZONES AND VERIFY THE PROPER WORKING CONDITION OF YOUR SYSTEM. THIS WIIL BE IMPORTANT TO KNOW IF THE ZONES DO NOT WORK AFTER THE NEW OUTPUT BOARD HAS BEEN INSTALLED.

STEP 2. POWER DOWN THE SYSTEM BY UNPLUGGING THE 24VAC TRANSFORMER OR SHUTTING OFF THE 110VAC SUPPLY. DISCONNECT ANY BACKUP BATTERIES.

STEP 3. DISCONNECT THE ZONE WIRES, COMMON WIRE(S), AND 24VAC WIRES. MAKE SURE ALL THE WIRES ARE LABELED AS THIS WILL ENSURE QUICK AND ACCURATE RECONNECTIONS.

STEP 4. REMOVE THE CONTROLLER FROM THE ENCLOSURE. CAUTION: DO NOT PLACE THE CONTROLLER FACE UP AND ANY METALIC SURFACE AND THIS MAY DAMAGE THE CONTROLLER. ADDITIONALLY, REMOVE THE WIRE HARNESSES FROM THE CONTROLLER AND DISCONNECT THE OTHER END FROM THE FIELD WIRES. TAKE THE SLB BOARD AND DETERMINE A GOOD LOATION FOR IT IN THE ENCLOSURE. IT IS RECOMMENED TO MOUNT THE LIGHTNING BOARD AS CLOSE TO THE BACK (OR TOP DEPENDING ON HOW YOU ARE LOOKING AT IT) OF THE ENCLOSURE AS POSSIBLE, THIS WILL ALLOW ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE INCOMING ZONE WIRES. AFTER DETERMINING A GOOD LOCATION, CUT OUT THE DRILL TEMPLATE, TAPE IT IN THE DESIRED LOCATION, AND CENTER PUNCH THE FOUR MOUNTING HOLES. DRILL THE FOUR CORRESPONDING HOLES INTO THE ENLOSURE USING THE 3/16 INCH BIT. PUSH THE FOUR BOARD SUPPORTS INTO THE HOLES DRILLED INTO THE ENCLOSURE. THEN PUSH THE LIGHTNING BOARD ONTO THE SUPPORTS, SECURING IT INTO PLACE.

STEP 5. THE FIELD CONNECTORS ARE THE TYPE THAT DO NOT REQUIRE A SCREW DRIVER TO INSTALL THE WIRES. FOR SOLID 12, 14, 16 OR 18 GUAGE WIRES, STRIP APPROXIMATELY ½ INCH OF INSULATION OFF AND SIMPLY PUSH THE WIRE INTO THE CORRESPONDING SLOT. EACH ZONE LOCATION HAS THE CAPACITY TO HOLD TWO WIRES, ONE IN EACH HOLE. TO REMOVE THE WIRES, PUSH THE BLACK LEVER DOWN TO RELEASE THE WIRE AND PULL THE WIRE OUT. CAUTION: THESE BLACK LEVERS WILL NOT WITHSTAND A LOT OF ABUSE! FOR STRANDED WIRE, STRIP THE WIRE AS ABOVE, PUSH THE BLACK LEVER DOWN, INSERT THE WIRE INTO THE SLOT THE RELEASE THE BLACK LEVER. DO NOT CONNECT THE COMMON WIRE(S) AT THIS POINT. THE COMMON WIRE(S) WILL BE CONNECTED AFTER THE CONTROLLER HAS BEEN POWERED UP.

THE TRANSFORMER HARNESS FROM THE FACTORY HAS A WHITE TWO POSITION CONNECTOR IN PLACE ALL READY. AT THE 24VAC HEADER LOCATED AT THE LOWER LEFT CORNER OF THE BOARD, SLIDE THE TRANSFORMER CONNECTOR INTO PLACE. YOU'LL NOTICE THE CONNECTOR DOES NOT HAVE A LOCKING RAMP BUT THE HEADER DOES. THE CONNECTOR WILL SLIDE ON EASILLY ONLY ONE WAY, IF YOU HAVE TO FORCE IT ON, IT'S THE WRONG WAY!

STEP 6. IN A LOCATION AS CLOSE TO THE CONTROLLER AS POSSIBLE, INSTALL THE GROUND ROD INTO THE GROUND PER GROUND ROD INSTRUCTIONS. RUN THE 6 TO 10 GAUGE COPPER WIRE FROM THE GROUND ROD TO THE TERMINAL LABELED GROUND ROD. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT STEP AS THE LIGHTNING BOARD WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY WITHOUT A PROPER, DEDICATED GROUND, GROUND ROD ASSEMBLY SHOULD MEG OUT 5 OHMS OR LESS. IN ADDITION, IF THE ENCLOSURE WAS PREVIOUSLY GROUNDED, RUN A WIRE FROM THE XFMR GND TERMINAL TO THE ENCLOSURE. IF THE COMMON WAS PREVIOUSLY GROUNDED RUN A JUMPER WIRE FROM THE XFMR GND TERMINAL TO THE COM TERMINAL. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE IF THE COMMON OR ENCLOSURE IS GROUNDED, USE YOUR OHM METER AND MEASURE FROM THE XFMR GND TERMINAL TO THE ENCLOSURE CHASSIS AND TO THE COMMON WIRE(S). A LOW READING, 5 OHMS OR LESS INDICATES GROUNDING. AT THIS POINT IF YOU ARE STILL NOT SURE, DO NOT GUESS. A WRONG GUESS COULD DAMAGE YOUR CONTROLLER. CONNECT THE FIELD ZONE WIRES, AND 24VAC WIRES. DO NOT CONNECT THE COMMON WIRE(S) AT THIS TIME.

STEP 7. THE WIRE HARNESSES HAVE WHITE CONNECTORS ON BOTH ENDS FOR QUICK INSTALLATION. THE TWO WIRE BLACK AND WHITE HARNESS IS FOR THE TRANFORMER. THE FOUR WIRE WHITE, BROWN, WHITE, AND BLACK HARNESS IS FOR THE SENSOR, COMMON, AND MASTER VALVE. EACH OF THE SIX WIRE HARNESSES ARE COLOR CODED TO MATCH THE CONTROLLERS ORIGINAL HARNESSES. CONNECT THE WIRE HARNESSES TO THE CORRESPONDING HEADER ON THE LIGHTNING BOARD. WHEN PUSHING THE CONNECTORS ONTO THE HEADERS MAKE SURE THE LOCKING RAMP OF THE CONNECTOR MATES WITH THE LOCKING RAMP OF THE HEADER. PROPER INTALLATION WILL HAVE THE WIRES OF THE HARNESSES POINTED DOWN TOWARDS THE MIDDLE OF THE LIGHTNING BOARD. IF THE WIRES ARE POINTED AWAY FROM THE BOARD, THE WIRE HARNESS IS INSTALLED INCORRECTLY. AFTER ALL THE HARNESSES ARE CONNECTED, HOLD THE CONTROLLER CAREFULLY AS YOU PUSH THE WHITE CONNECTOR OF EACH HARNESS ONTO ITS CORRESPONDING HEADER ON THE CONTROLLER. MAKE SURE THE LOCKING RAMP OF EACH WHITE CONNECTOR IS POINTED UP. IF THE LOCKING RAMP IS POINTED DOWN TOWARDS THE CIRCUIT BOARD OF THE CONTROLLER, THE CONTROLLER MAY BE DAMAGED UPON POWER UP. REINSTALL THE CONTROLLER INTO THE ENCLOSURE.

STEP 8. REAPPLY THE 24VAC TO THE CONTROLLER. ONCE THERE IS A GOOD DISPLAY, RECONNECT THE FIELD COMMON WIRE(S) TO THE LIGHTNING BOARD.

STEP 9. WITH THE MANUAL FUNCTION, ACTIVATE ALL THE ZONES TO VERIFY PROPER WORKING CONDITION. IF ALL THE ZONES ARE WORKING GOOD, GO TO STEP 8. IF NOT, VERIFY 24VAC AT THE TERMINAL STRIP, AND MAKE SURE ALL THE CONNECTIONS TO THE LIGHTNING BOARD ARE GOOD. WITH OHM METER, TEST FOR RESISTANCE OF EACH NON WORKING ZONE BETWEEN THE CONTROLLER TERMINAL STRIP AND THE FIELD SIDE TERMINAL STRIP; YOU SHOULD READ APPROXIMATELY ONE OHM. IF THERE ARE ANY READINGS OVER 2 OHMS REPLACE CORRESPONDING FUSE AND REPEAT TEST. IF ALL TESTS ARE GOOD, RETURN THE LIGHTNING BOARD FOR A NEW ONE.

STEP 10. REPROGRAM THE CONTROLLER.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS: THE LIGHTNING BOARD WILL IN MOST CASES AUTOMATICALLY RESET AFTER A POWER SURGE. SHOULD AN EVENT OCCURE THAT RENDERS A ZONE INOPERABLE, THE FUSES LOCATED IN THE SOCKETS FMV-F12, F13-F24, AND F25-36 ARE DESIGNED TO OPEN IN THE EVENT OF TOO MUCH ELECTRICAL CURRENT. THE FUSE MAY BE DISCOLORED, BURNT, OR MAY HAVE NO PHYSICAL SIGNS OF DAMAGE BUT AN OHMS TEST ACROSS IT WILL DETERMINE IF IT IS GOOD OR NOT. GOOD FUSES MEASURE 1 OHM. ALL OTHER READINGS INDICATE A BAD FUSE. USE A SET OF NEEDLE NOSE PLIES REMOVE OLD FUSE AND TO REPLACE THE NEW FUSE.

IF YOU HAVE ZONE THAT STOPS OPERATING, REPLACE THE CORRESPONDING FUSE AND TEST FOR OPERATION.
